Who holds your recording

Accents.ie is run by Monterra, SL, a company registered in Andorra. We're the data controller: we decide what happens to your recording, and we're the ones answerable for it.

Andorra is outside the European Union, so European data protection law still applies to us because we're offering this to people in Ireland.

What we ask for

You have to give us:

• Your recording – about seven seconds of your voice, reading the set phrase.
• The county the accent is from. It's the answer the game scores against.
• Whether you grew up there. Accents are largely set by your late teens, so this is what makes the county label trustworthy.

Everything else is optional, and the recording is just as usable without it:

• Town or area, year of birth, gender – for the per-county pages, and for showing how a county's accent shifts across generations.
• Your name – shown with your recording if you give it. Leave it blank and you stay anonymous.
• Your email – so we can reach you, including if you want the clip taken down.
• A link to your site, and anything else you want to tell us.

Once your recording is in, you can add a second one if you like: a local phrase or saying, up to 30 seconds, with what you said and, if you want, what it means. It's linked to your first recording, so it shares its county and details, and it has its own permission questions. It's never part of the game.

Saved alongside it automatically: whether you recorded in the browser or uploaded a file, the file's size, length and format, and the time it arrived. That's all technical housekeeping about the audio itself.

We don't store your IP address. There is no advertising and no tracking of any kind on the form – or anywhere else on this site. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It sets no cookies, doesn't store your IP address and doesn't track you across sites.

When you play the game, we count plays, guesses and scores to see how it's doing. To tell players apart without tracking anyone, the server mixes your IP address and browser type with a random key that's replaced every week, and keeps only the scrambled result. The old keys are deleted, so that result can't be traced back to you. We also note your country and whether you're on a phone or a computer.

What you're agreeing to

Consent is the only thing we rely on to use your recording. We ask two separate questions, because they're genuinely different things, and only the first is required:

1. I'm 16 or over, and happy for my recording to be published on accents.ie – required
2. Share my recording on social media – optional

Saying no to social media costs you nothing. It's asked on its own because it's a bigger ask than the site: a clip on accents.ie can be taken down completely, but once something is posted on social media, other people can save and reshare it. If you ask, we'll delete our posts, but we can't recall those copies.

While the site is new, clips may be shared from the founder's personal accounts as well.

The exact version of this wording you agreed to is stored with your recording. If we ever reword it, what you agreed to doesn't quietly change underneath you.

Nothing goes live until a person has listened to it

Every submission is reviewed by hand before it appears anywhere on the site. A recording without permission to publish can't be approved at all – the database refuses it, so it isn't a matter of us remembering.

Changing your mind

Email hello@accents.ie and say which county you recorded and roughly when. You don't need to explain why.

Deleting is one action that removes the audio file and the row holding your details together. It's permanent, and we keep no copy – not an archive, not a backup we quietly hang on to.

If you also sent a local phrase, deleting your recording deletes that too. You can ask for just the phrase to come down instead.

Where it's actually kept

• The audio sits in Cloudflare R2, in a private bucket in western Europe. It isn't reachable from the open internet: the only way to hear an unpublished clip is through our password-protected admin page.
• Everything else is in a Supabase Postgres database in their West EU (Ireland) region, locked down so that only our own server can read it.

Those two companies, Cloudflare and Supabase, are the only processors involved. No other analytics provider, no advertising network, no email platform, no third-party embeds. Nobody buys this data and nobody is offered it.

We reach both of those from Andorra, which is where the company is. That's allowed without any extra paperwork on your side: the European Commission decided in 2010 that Andorra protects personal data to the standard the EU requires, and has confirmed it since.

Once a clip is approved and published, it's on a public web page and anyone can listen to it. That's the point of the project – but it's worth saying out loud.

Cookies, and the one thing your browser remembers

We don't set any cookies, which is why there's no cookie banner.

If you play the game, your browser remembers your best streak on your own device. It never leaves that device and we can't see it. Clearing your browser data clears it.

How long we keep it

Recordings are kept for as long as the site runs. This is an archive as much as a game – the value of it is that it lasts, and that a clip recorded this year can still be compared with one recorded in twenty.

If the site ever shuts down for good, the recordings and everything attached to them are deleted. And you can withdraw at any point in between, which is the part that actually matters.

You have to be 16 or over

Ireland's digital age of consent is 16, so please don't send a recording if you're younger than that. If we find out a contributor was under 16, we delete the recording.

Your rights

Under GDPR you can ask us to:

• give you a copy of everything we hold about you, including your recording;
• correct anything that's wrong;
• delete it;
• hand it over in a form you can take elsewhere;
• stop or restrict what we're doing with it;
• and withdraw your consent, at any time, for either question separately.

Ask at hello@accents.ie and we'll deal with it within a month. Withdrawing consent doesn't retrospectively make what we did before it unlawful, but it does mean we stop, and the clip comes down.

If you think we've handled your data badly, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission – dataprotection.ie. We'd rather you told us first, but you don't have to.

If this notice changes

The date below changes with it. If something changes that affects recordings already sent to us, we email the contributors who left an address rather than quietly editing the page.
